Echo Lake in Acadia National Park

Echo Lake, Acadia National Park

Echo Lake is “the” lake and beach that locals and other people “in-the-know” go to on a hot summer's day. There are a few reasons for this. One is that there are less crowds. Another is that the water is very clean and warmer than the other options. Another reason? How about that there is a 839 foot high (256 meter) mountain, called Beech Mountain, right next to the western shore overlooking the lake and beach below. Is there any wonder why people like it here? Therealso is a hiking trail that leads from the parking area to the summit for those wanting some additional exercise or adventure.

Echo Lake in Acadia National ParkEcho Lake is on Acadia National Park land south of Somesville and north of Southwest Harbor off Route 102 on Mount Desert Island (MDI). The little MDI map to the right should give you an idea where it is relative to everything else.

There is another way to get to the top of Beech Mountain rather than climb the steeper trail on the lake side. To do this, you would need to drive back to Somesville and take a left and then another left onto Beech Hill Road. Following this road in a southerly direction takes you to a parking area on the west side of the mountain. From there, you may take a trail with a gradual climb to the top of Beech Mountain where you can relax and take in the spectacular views. Keep in mind that this is a mountain with dangerous steep cliffs. Exercise extreme caution. The small rocks under your feet can act like tiny marbles. Make sure to have a cell phone with you but, on the island, there are no guarantees whether it will have a strong signal if any at all in some places.
