The main Acadia National Park Visitor Center is located in Hulls Cove, Bar Harbor, Maine just off from Route 3. Open from April 15 through October 31, the facility is a good place to begin your visit and a good resource for maps. The center is staffed by knowledgeable personnel who can answer your questions and help plan your day. There also is a free 15 minute audiovisual program, available in English, French, German, audio description, and captioned, played every half hour. This gives the new visitor a good orientation on what there is to see and various other aspects.
Some informative ranger-led activities are available. Ask someone at the center for a schedule of talks, walks, hikes, boat cruises, children's activities, and evening programs. There are ample publications, activity schedules, and a self-guiding CD tour available for purchase. Profits from any sales help support operations of the park.
There is a good sized parking area. The center itself is at a higher elevation - a full 52 steps up. For people with special access needs, an entrance is available through a back entrance. If you or someone with you needs to take advantage of this, note that at the stop sign, just before turning right into the parking area, that the road continues straight up a little hill. This is where you must go.
The Hulls Cove Visitor Center is closed from November 1 through April 14. If information is needed during this time, go to the Park Headquarters location on Highway 233 about 3 miles west of Bar Harbor. The Headquarters location is open year round Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM except on Federal Holidays, December 24, 25, and January 1. It is also closed weekends from mid-April through October.
Acadia National Park remains open all year but some roads and facilities are closed in the winter. Most of the Park Loop Road, including the road to Cadillac Mountain, is closed from December 1 through April 14. Unpaved roads in the park are generally closed November 15 through May 14. Weather conditions may require that roads be closed earlier in the fall or delay their opening in the spring.
