Biking in Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, or other parts of Mount Desert Island is a dream. There are so many picturesque roads and places to mention that it is difficult to know where to begin. How about the Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park for one? Where else can you peddle right next to the ocean, crashing waves, and tall mountains? You have the option of doing the entire 27 mile (43.5 km) loop or doing sections. Since the Free Island Explorer Bus Service has many stops throughout the park and in most of the villages, AND, since they will carry you and your bike, you can plan as you please.
Here is another great option: 43 miles (69.2 km) of carriage roads! These go around spectacular lakes, mountains, through forests with plentiful wildlife, and NO motorized vehicle traffic. This road system is the finest example of broken-stone roads in America and was made especially for walking, jogging, biking, and horses. The photo above shows part of a 6.1 mile (9.8 km) carriage road that goes completely around Eagle Lake. You can access it off Route 233 about 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Bar Harbor.
Of course, there are so many other places as well. You may want to just meander through the streets of Bar Harbor and explore the many beautiful inns and bed & breakfasts, or just watch the people having a good time. Or, take some time to discover the Duck Brook Road. This is a beautiful section with two stone faced bridges.
